We work in several training centres in the North and East to provide technical training in selected fields upto the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) Levels 3 & 4 in order to ensure the eligibility of candidates.

In May 2009, the three-decade long civil war between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was put to an end. Post-conflict reconstruction and reintegration efforts have been going on ever since in the North and the East of the country – the regions most severely affected by the conflict. Displaced people have been resettled and economic activities are being resumed.

There is an urgent need for qualified and skilled personnel not only in the infrastructure reconstruction process, but also in the emerging economy. This need is expected to grow further in the coming years with further resettlement and increase of economic activities including new business start-ups.

Thirty years of war and displacement have prevented thousands of young people from attending school on a regular basis and from completing their education. Opportunities for further education within the formal or informal sectors are extremely limited. Few training centres offer courses conferring level 1 to 4 of the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) in the North.

The existing vocational training facilities in the region are limited due to lack of quality training and due to insufficient resources. Consequently, young people have been deprived of access to training and the shortage of training courses has prevented them from fulfilling their potential and from augmenting their income.

The SLGTI will ensure that these youths are offered a chance to make use of high quality vocational training that will equip them with the skills required to compete on the emerging labour markets.
