In support of employable youth: the GIZ mobile Career Guidance Unit
Colombo, 5 May 2014 – The GIZ mobile Career Guidance Unit (CGU), part of the Vocational Training in the North of Sri Lanka project (VTN), has a distinctive appearance. The Unit is housed in a vintage Mercedes Benz bus, sponsored by DIMO, and travels to different parts of the island, providing vocational training and skills development support to Sri Lankan youth.
Launched last year during celebrations to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Germany, the CGU has already visited a number of locations in Colombo. The bus will also travel to the North and East, including Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Batticaloa and Ampara. Most recently, the CGU was on site at a leather goods fair in Kilinochchi with the aim of linking small and medium scale manufacturers in the province to large scale suppliers based in Colombo.
Germany’s engagement with Sri Lanka’s vocational training sector began in 1986, and culminates in the setting up of the Sri Lankan-German Vocational Training Institute in Kilinochchi. The institute provides needs-oriented training programmes to improve employment opportunities for youth, particularly those from conflict-affected areas. GIZ is the technical agency which implements the project on behalf of the German government.
